Blog for Choice Day: This is a Very Serious Post

Hello, Internet. It's been a while.

As I write this, it is 9:30 on the evening of January 21st, a Friday. And tomorrow, as you may or may not know, is the 22nd, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, quite easily the most monumental Supreme Court case in the history of the feminist movement. It was the day that it was finally decided that women should have control over their own bodies, and where it was finally declared what has always been true, that women shouldn't be forced to allow their bodies be used by another, not even a fetus. In the 38 years since women gained the right to choose, that right has been constantly tested; clinics have been picketed and bombed, providers have been threatened and murdered, and women have been verbally and physically abused, all by groups of people who claim to respect life above all. And this year, the GOP, drunk on their victories fueled by a bunch of hateful whackadoos who were dumb enough to name themselves after what you do to people you pwn in Halo, is going to try its hardest to hack away at those rights, bit by bit. In the midst of one of the most tumultuous financial times since the 30s, fighting a war in a country we have no business being in in the first place, facing grave truths about the devastation our reckless use of the Earth has created, and the GOP says that making it so a woman can't choose to end a pregnancy is their greatest concern. Now I don't know about you, but that pisses me right off.

I sat down for a long time after I decided to participate in Blog for Choice Day, trying to figure out what to say about all of this. This is supposed to be a blog about feminism AND geek culture, I thought, am I leaning too far to the feminist side if I write an entire post about reproductive rights? I can't exactly interject a lot of stupid video game references into some serious discussion of the importance of body autonomy, can I? And I actually started to write something that was gonna be just that, but it turned out to be horrible, so I stopped. There had to be some way to seamlessly integrate serious talk about reproductive rights and geekery.

But eventually I gave up on that too, and asked some my my awesome feminist buddies on Twitter to assist me in creating Crazy Anti-Choice Guy.

Yes, in the grand tradition of Privilege Denying Dude and Time of the Month Tiger, I thought it was time to add another to the pantheon of feminist friendly image macros, one, specifically, for us to use to poke fun at the often completely batshit and offensive things the anti-choice crowd tries to pass off.

I can't take complete responsibility for this, I got a lot of picture suggestions from the lovely ladies who post on the #prochoice tag on Twitter, and the amazingly awesome Megan (who's equally excellent blog, Feminist to the Rescue, can be found here) was the one who gave the image the signature pie-like background. And, of course, no macro can achieve greatness without hilarious people on the internet taking it and running with it, so now it's up to you guys. Go forth! Think back to something some frothy lady with a sign yelled at you as you walked into a clinic, or the thing your pearl clutching Aunt Ruth told you she heard at church that had her so "concerned," or a "pithy quote" from that one asshole dude who always seems to show up in the women studies classes just to make sexist remarks and act smug, or hell, something a 13 year old with no idea what he was on about said on X-Box Live (Don't you hate it when people bring up controversial subjects in online games? Ew, who does that?). Then slap that stupid sentiment onto this here beautiful base.

Roflbot is a good service to use, and I'll try to get a link up to it on MemeGeneratior, but right now it seems to be having a seizure and won't let me set it up. However you make it, once you do, send it to me, or post it on your own blog, or link it on twitter, or facebook, but most of all send it to me, cuz I'll post every single one I get here.

Go forth, my friends! Go forth and macro! For freedom, for body autonomy, and for great lolz!

Happy Roe v. Wade Day, everyone!

ETA: Here's a link to the MemeGenerator page for Crazy Anti Choice Guy. Go nuts!

Heh...

So, um... hi blog!

Look, I know it's been a long ass time since I wrote anything, and for that I sincerely apologize. Life ganged up on me for a while, what can I say. My lovely beau Nova has been trying to get into online sports journalism (...if that's a thing you can get into), and I've been helping him get his series of mixed martial arts commentary videos, Geek Into MMA, off the ground. Add to the that the fact that I had finals, and after that the hectic holiday season (I mean, those hours upon hours of Resident Evil were NOT going to play themselves), and then I became the mommy of two bouncing baby boy rats, who have taken up all my time with their adorableness. Also, thourghout all this, I was struck with the worst case of writers block of my life. I cannot count the times I tried to write something, but alas, my brain would not stay on it. So yes, my dear readers, I have failed you, and for that, I am sorry.

But! It is a new year, rife with new possibilities. I am not giving up on this blog, and I fully intend to have a new post up by some time next week. PINKY SWEAR. I love you all!

Sunny.
